Boy, 17, charged in shooting that left woman, 43, dead in South Shore

CHICAGO (CBS) — A 17-year-old boy was charged in the shooting that left a woman dead in the South Shore neighborhood on Thursday.
Chicago police said he was placed in police custody the same day, just before 10 p.m., in the 7000 block of South Cottage Grove. The teen was charged with first-degree murder.
Tatanisha Jackson, 43, was shot four times in the head in her home in the 6800 block of South Cornell Avenue at 3:55 p.m. Thursday.
Police said the 17-year-old boy shot Jackson before running away, but turned himself in several hours after the incident.
Jackson was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
A man who was just getting off work nearby said he heard over a dozen gunshots.
“So everything was peaceful, and then out of nowhere, shots let off,” said Ronald Jackson. “We hear like eight shots. After the eight shots, I’m like, ‘No, that wasn’t no gunshots.’ Then it was six more.”
Ronald Jackson said he recognizes the victim’s pictures that have been circulating on social media.
“I’ve seen her a couple times. Sorry to hear that. Just, you know, death in this city—it’s sad. Every day, every year, it just happens,” he said. “So I feel sorry for their family.”
Police did recover a gun from the scene.
Police have not confirmed the relationship between the victim and the shooter.
The teen is schedueld to appear at a detention hearing on Saturday.
